AFUW-ACT Inc. Meeting Report

Topic: Brindabella Gardens

Speaker: Valerie Smith

At the end of the year function Valerie told us of the work of the Auxiliary. Currently there are two of our members there as full time residents - Margaret Weeden and Daphne Renwick. The money raised at the function was sent to the Auxiliary.
In 1985 it was decided to start with a 59 place hostel for the frail aged -Brindabella Gardens Hostel. In 1990 a 40-bed nursing home and 12-place special care hostel were added. The auxiliary first met in 1985 with 16 people, by 1994 there were 64 members. Initially their role was to provide essential items - but now they work for additional facilities which are not available from general funds; they liaise with the Director of Nursing to identify areas where they can best support the work of management and staff.
Changes have had to be made according to Government directives. The investment phase made it possible to purchase a bus much to the delight of residents and staff. The Auxiliary has purchased curtains, chairs, tables, wheelchair tables, trolleys, TV's, videos, DVD's, music tapes, artworks. A regular amount is contributed to Diversional Therapy for the purchase of craft and other goods. Members take a trolley of goods round to residents, present birthday cards and flowers and so on. They hold many fund raising functions. They hope to assist in covering a courtyard so residents can sit outside and they aim to create a garden in the courtyard.
