AFUW-ACT
Inc. Meeting Report
TOPIC: "Hori - alone in Calcutta".
Sppeaker: Ms Paramita Roy
Members gathered in the Law School to hear Paramita Roy tell of her
film making efforts. She was born in Calcutta but left there at the
age of 20 to go to Saudi Arabia, then Papua New Guinea where her husband’s
work sent him. She later went to Canada where she was a teacher. She
taught media and photography.
She then went to TV school where she learnt directing and filmmaking.
Paramita has made a movie called "Hori - alone in Calcutta". It was
made on a very tight budget but with much love, passion and enthusiasm.
A team of 5 traveled to work with film industry professionals in India
and worked on a film project called "Hori alone in Kolkata". This collaborative
project included caste and crew from both nations.
Whilst in India she saw that people there were interested in Australia
so she is now on a new project writing a screenplay. The script was
developed in collaboration with the actors who were very excited about
it. Two hundred applicants sought a part in it. It took 15 -20 days
to produce it. The tsunami upset everyone but they all got back to the
production. Many Indian children have to work for a living so it was
important to make people aware of the situation. The film is going to
be distributed to schools in India, as Paramita wants to educate people
about the have-nots. The film is to be screened at the Tuggeranong Arts
Centre.
