AFGW-ACT Inc. Meeting Report

Topic: A TO Y OF PUBLISHING

Speaker: JENNIFER PHILLIPS

Website: citwings.com

Jennifer told us of her early life on a farm in New Zealand and about her lifelong obsession with art and, writing and how it has influenced her artistic and Christian expression. Her parents encouraged her. She experimented with paint from 13 years of age; she was struck by the colours in the gum trees when she came to Australia. She experimented with line and colour in High School. Maori carvings inspired her to draw in pencil. She had her first exhibition at 16 and won prizes. Her English teacher commissioned her to do a painting and paid her for it.
As a child she wrote plays and stories; her first Poems were written and published when she was 12.

In New Zealand she met with a group of poets once a month.
She likes to present values or truth in her poems. She is looking for pattern in sound and words and makes visual patterns with words and pictures. She is moving towards a combination of art and poetry formed by using visual cues. Jennifer continues to explore new ideas and recently published a book of poetry that she illustrated. She plans further publications.
